IELTS Writing Test is different for IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training. We have already discussed IELTS Writing Test for Academics, now we will discuss the IELTS General Training in detail.
The Candidates taking the IELTS Test for General Training will get 60 minutes and have to complete 2 tasks –
Here we will discuss in detail the IELTS Written Test for General Training Tasks which you have to perform in the test. We will also share some valuable insights so that it is easier for you to understand and crack the test.
Therefore to understand the intricacies of the Test let us have a look at the IELTS Written Test paper in detail.
In Writing Task 1, test takers are given a scenario and expected to describe a personal response in the form of an informal, semi-formal, or formal letter of at least 150 words in the assigned answer booklet. Writing to a college accommodation officer about housing concerns, writing to a new employer about time management issues, writing to a local newspaper about a plan to establish a local airport, and so on are examples of situations they are required to write about.
This test evaluates the ability of the candidate to adhere to English letter-writing rules (i.e., what order to place material in, what style to employ, how to start and end a letter), to use language correctly and effectively, and to organize and link appropriate information cohesively.
In the Writing Test 2, in the provided response book, test takers have to prepare a semi-formal/neutral discursive essay of at least 250 words.
The task instructions include details on a point of view, argument, or issue. They next instruct test takers on how to respond, which may include providing general facts, describing and/or offering a solution, justifying an opinion, and analyzing evidence and ideas.
Topics of general interests are given. This may range from whether children’s leisure activities should be educational. Concerns like why families aren’t as close as they once were and how they may be brought closer. Topics on environmental concerns and how they can be managed, and so on.
Test takers should pay close attention to the task and produce a complete and appropriate response. They should clearly organize their thoughts and back up their claims with appropriate examples, including personal experience or facts. Test takers must be able to articulate more abstract and complicated thoughts, as well as use a variety of language and grammatical structures, in order to complete this task.
Candidates must write at least 250 words for the test and will be penalized if their response is too brief. This task should take them no longer than 40 minutes.
Test takers should also be aware that if their response is off-topic or not written as a whole, continuous text, they will be penalized for irrelevance. It might affect their score also if they are caught plagiarising (copying from someone else’s work).
This task will test your ability to follow English discursive writing conventions (i.e., what order to put information in, what style to use, how to start and finish discursive writing, how to paragraph), to organize and link information coherently and cohesively, and to use words properly and appropriately.
Each activity is graded separately. Task 2 is given more weight in the marking process than Task 1. Whole and half bands are used to report scores. Written performance in the nine IELTS bands has been described in detail using detailed performance descriptors. They can be found on the page on how IELTS is scored. The descriptors apply to both the Academic and General Training versions of the course and are based on the following criteria.
The ability of the test taker to create and establish a position in response to a question or statement is evaluated. Ideas should be backed up by evidence, and examples from the test takers’ own lives can be used.

To start, familiarize yourself with the exam format and subjects that will be covered in each session. Once you’re familiar with the exam structure, make a study plan and stick to it for at least 5-6 weeks. After you’ve covered all of the topics, take the IELTS practice tests and attempt them as if you were taking the exam.
This is dependent on your present English language proficiency. You may prepare for the IELTS exam in a month or even less if you are fluent in English. Learning linguistic skills, on the other hand, takes a lot longer. It also relies on how many hours you devote to work each day. If you study for long periods of time, you may be able to cover all of the topics in less time.
You can achieve a good score even with a little preparation if you are fluent in the English language. You can, however, enhance your score by studying for the IELTS exam.
Before taking the test, candidates should be aware of the IELTS scoring system. You will get the IELTS Score Scale here.
